Summary/Abstract: This article aims to broaden the scope of interpretation of the problem of understanding in the pedagogical reality. The issues of understanding in the field of natural science education are discussed. The problem of understanding is linked to important contemporary priorities – scientific literacy, metacognitive skills, the role of history, methodology and philosophy of science, reflective thinking.
