Summary/Abstract: The expression »dog days« is usually associated with the sultry summer period unbearable even to dogs. On the basis of the texts taken from the old Croatian literature the author proves that the adjective »dog« in the syntagma »dog days« refers to the Dog Star which, during that period, rises at the same time as the Sun.
