Summary/Abstract: This paper sets to present and comment upon some historical aspects of the relationship between translation (the translation activity) and the theory of translation – from Antiquity to the Renaissance and from the Romantic period to the present day. How can the relationship between the translation activity and the theory of translation be characterized in today’s world? To what extent have translation principles and standards, but also general reflections of past periods been transferred to the present day and, if so, to what extent have translation principles been further developed and perfected?
