Summary/Abstract: Language makes debates and negotiations possible and defuses conflicts in political life. It can even supersede weapons. However, it can become a weapon itself. The so-called German un-words of the year can be viewed as an example of the language as a weapon. A panel consisting of four linguists and one journalist, situated at the University of Darmstadt, Germany, has been choosing an un-word every year since 1991. This paper investigates the unwords: Gutmensch (2015; lit. ‘do-gooder’, someone who helps and protects refugees), Lügenpresse (2014; lit. ‘liar press’ referring to media outlets that allegedly have been influenced by left-wings parties), Sozialtourismus (2013; welfare tourism, lit. ‘social tourism’ for immigrants from poorer countries), Opfer-Abo (2012; Kachelmann trial; lit. ‘victim supscription’; Kachelmann’s perception that women make repeatedly false claims of sexual assault), Döner-Morde (2011; lit. ‘döner murders’; racial hate crimes committed by members of the terrorist group National Socialist Underground, whereby the victims, mostly Turkish shop and restaurant owners, were initially alleged to have been connected to organized crime) and alternativlos (2010; ‘without an alternative’, a term regarding the decisions of the German Federal Government since 2009).
