Personal Characteristics and Humor Level Assessment in Different Social Situations

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper was to examine contribution of personality traits to readiness of subject to respond with laugh in various social situations. The sample consisted of 450 (207 male and 243 female) students of the School of Philosophy, School of Political Sciences and School of Criminology of the University of Sarajevo. The average age of the subjects was 21.2 (SD=1.6). The data were collected by using the methods of guided group work, and the following instruments were used: the questionnaire for examining the Big Five personality factors (NEO-PIR), Situational Humour Response Questionnaire (SHRQ). Standard regression models were used to analyse data. Results shows that all Big Five personality traits has statistical significant contribution in explaining variance in readiness of a person to respond with humour in a wide range of life situation. Subject who estimates that situation is the only factor in readiness to respond with humour in various social situations has high score on Conscientiousness and Neuroticism but low score on Extraversion.
