Summary/Abstract: Analysis of How It Is, a work by Polish artist Mirosław Bałka, prepared as part of the Unilever Series at the Tate Modern Gallery, London, in 2009. The reflection on this instance of artistic expression becomes an axis of considerations of an alternative concept of the aesthetics of trauma. The critic draws upon various literary (Laszlo Krasznohaorkai, W.G. Seblad) as well as theoretical contexts (Walter Benjamin, Cathy Caruth, Marie Torok, Nicholas Abraham) as she attempts at setting the position of art in relation to history, memory, and trauma
