The Oldest Slavic Manuscript Tradition of the Ascetic-Monastic Works of Gregory Sinaites in the 14th Century

Summary/Abstract: The article explores the Slavic (Middle-Bulgarian) manuscript tradition of the monastic works of Gregory Sinaites, thus providing important information about the history of the original Greek texts. The process of the composition of the eight Chapters on Prayer can be traced in the Slavic manuscripts, starting from those dated to the 1330s. It appears that by the 1360s all of Gregory's works, except for the Homily on the Transfiguration, had already been translated into Slavic (Middle-Bulgarian). From then on the Slavic (Middle-Bulgarian) translation started spreading among the Serbs and the Eastern Slavs. A single text is preserved only in Slavic translation: a short, one-folium commentary on Ephesians 6:12. The present article is intended to be a first step toward future editions of the Slavic texts based on the oldest manuscript tradition.
