Summary/Abstract: The Brukenthal Library is in possession of several numbers of this Austrian magazine, which was issued between 1875 and 1918. We have chosen to focus on the first number. The magazine has got a broad scope, as is indicated by its very title; the German geographical concept “der Orient” also includes North Africa, thus the “Österreichische Monatsschrift” being a real mine of information for the state of affairs across the Old World during the Long 19th Century. One can encounter four articles on Romania, one on Hungary – of which Transylvania also formed part –, on the famous Nizhny-Novgorod fair, and, besides, the cultural side is not left behind:there is included an article on the recent discovery of the Saldae aqueduct in Algeria, the antiquities trade in the Near East, and reviews of book on the history of culture.
