Summary/Abstract: One of the most important names in recent Turkish military and political history, İsmet İnönü directed or was involved in many events in Turkish politics. He was the first prime minister of the Turkish Republic, and especially from the death of Atatürk until 1950, he occupied a key position in the government’s decision-making mechanisms. In keeping Turkey out of the Second World War, in the transition to multi-party rule, and even at times when he was in the opposition, his views and what he said were taken notice of. Given his peculiarities and a reasonably long life, the death of the “Number Two” had great repercussions. The press showed great interest throughout his illness until his death, and his death attracted great public attention. This study examines the period from when İsmet İnönü fell ill until his death and the events during his funeral, mainly through the eyes of the press.
