Summary/Abstract: During the last couple of decades, it was proved beyond any doubt that interior and exterior conditions, which during pregnancy correlate directly with the growth and development of the unborn child, exercise a direct impact on the child’s development as newborn and infant, and particularly later, during the whole lifetime. Unfavourable peri-natal occurrences during pregnancy (mother’s malnutrition, hypoxia, inflammatory processes) are connected with numerous early and later intermediary metabolism disorders and morphological changes; this may gradually lead to morbidity – earlier or later. It was proved that fetal hypoxia and intrauterine inflammation correlate directly with the frequency of neuromotoric damage to the child, especially cerebral paresis, in more than 90 % cases occurring during pregnancy; the incidence thereof did not decrease in the last sixty years despite the advancement of peri-natal care. Furthermore, the type of childbirth (e.g. increase in the incidence of C-section) becomes ever more related to the later unfavourable impact on health and quality of life, the increased incidence of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, allergies and asthma. Sudden infant death syndrome, atherogenesis, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, cerebro-vascular and heart attack, autism and hyperactive disorders may develop from unfavourable occurrences during pregnancy, especially if caused by the aforementioned hypoxia or inflammatory processes. The paper presents the knowledge regarding unfavourable occurrences during pregnancy and childbirth, and their impact on health and quality of life during growing up and in the adulthood, as well as their interrelations. The paper further intends to present the interconnection of individual types of diseases and causes of death in the Bjelovar-Bilogora County with the mentioned knowledge. Possible risk factors and lifestyles will also be listed.
