Summary/Abstract: The great interest arisen in Bulgaria during the last few years towards abnormal phenomena (especially UFO, poltergeist and extrasensory perceptions) could be analysed from two different points of view. First of all, that interest is manifested in a result of the highly critical potential and the social tension existing lately in our country. Second, without discussing the authenticity of the UFO and poltergeist stories, the folklore scholar could reveal a great number of common features for abnormal phenomena stories and folklore tales. The UFO descriptions and the poltergeist behaviour recall folklore archetypes, as well as classical folklore narrative models. The similarity between abnormal events and folklore is not a “Bulgarian patent”; it is a general common feature of contemporary human culture. Nevertheless, Bulgarian stories about UFOs and poltergeists bear some marks of direct continuity from the mythical characters of Bulgarian folklore tradition. Consequently UFOs, poltergeists and extrasensory perceptions popularity could be regarded as manifestations of contemporary myths creation, related as well as to Bulgarian folklore tradition, as to some universal trends in nowadays mass culture.
