Summary/Abstract: In March 1910, Canon Josef Baud, vicar at the “St. Joseph” Cathedral in Bucharest, sent to the newspaper “Seara” a letter stating that the primate metropolitan Calinic Miclescu would become a Catholic before his death, in 1886. Because of the strong reactions coming from all sides, he was forced to leave the country and could not return. “Baud affair” determined a virulent reaction against the “papal expansionism” and the “Catholic propaganda”. Baud's letter made enormous disservice to the Catholic Church in Romania. The Catholicism would be perceived as hostile to national interests, and the Church of Rome would be considered as a tool of foreign countries.
