SCULPTURE IN THE TADEUSZ KANTOR’S THEATRE: THE DEAD CLASS

Summary/Abstract: Tadeusz Kantor is an artist who has worked in many fields such as painter, theatre director, writer, actor, happening artist, stage designer. This article deals the Tadeusz Kantor’ stage designs, each of which are considered to be ‘sculpture installations’, through his theatre play named The Dead Class. In 1955 he made the stage designs of the many theatre plays, he performed with Cricot 2 Theatre, which he founded with Maria Jarema and Kazimierz Mikulski. Kantor brings the object into focus in his paintings, happenings and theatre plays. In this article, firstly, the artist’s life history, which has an important place in the works of the artist, Kantor’s paintings, the sculpture in the theater of Kantor and then the use of objects in Kantor’s The Dead Class is examined. Vending machines, manikins, toys, objects in abstract form, and found objects take place in the Kantor’s theatre. These objects the artists employed in his theatre are not ordinary elements of stage design; Kantor’s theatre is based on such objects. Therefore, the understanding of Kantor’s theatre requires the evaluation of the meanings of these objects of art.
