Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the Hippocratic legacy in contemporary society. The argument is that philosophy and socio-political tradition of classical Hellas, which shaped the views in the Hippocratic collection, are at the heart of European spiritual heritage with the ideas of humanism, sanity and prosperity. The title paraphrase brings forth associations to Plato’s „Apology of Socrates“ in which he defends his favourite teacher against the attacks of the ignorant criticism. Socrates did not need the protection of Plato whose dialogue aims rather to remind the importance and significance of Socrates’ work. Neither does Hippocrates need our defence – his work has outgrown the time and offers the greatest example of the veracity of his own words ‚Life is short, the Art is long“. We would just remind the society of the importance and significance of Hippocratic ideas by summing up their influence on modern concepts.
