In defence of Charles V, the last emperor of the West

Summary/Abstract: Niniejszy artykuł recenzyjny dotyczy biografii Karola V autorstwa Geoffreya Parkera. Ze względu na skalę wykorzystanych źródeł i poruszonych w niej wątków, stanowi ona najpełniejszy obraz życia cesarza z wszystkich dotąd opublikowanych. Jednak nie jest książką całkowicie bezstronną, ani udaną jeśli chodzi o rewizję najbardziej kontrowersyjnych zagadnień z życia i panowania Karola V. W artykule została zakwestionowana główna teza Parkera jakoby u podstaw polityki cesarskiej leżał interes dynastyczny. W uzasadnieniu argumentuje się, że polityka dynastyczna pełniła funkcję służebną wobec idei jedności chrześcijańskiej Europy, którą Karol V próbował realizować w obliczu narodzin nowych ideologii i powstawania państw narodowych. This review article is concerned with Geoffrey Parker’s biography of CharlesV. In view of the extent of sources the author employs and the aspects he addresses, thisis the most comprehensive account of the emperor’s life, outstripping any that have beenpublished so far. However, it is not entirely impartial nor successful with regard to revisionof the most controversial issues in Charles V’s life and reign. The article thus challenges theprincipal proposition of Parker’s, namely that the emperor’s policies were founded on dynastic interests. In order to substantiate this assertion, the author argues that the dynasticpolicy was ancillary to the idea of unity of Christian Europe, which Charles V sought topursue faced with the emergence of both new ideologies and new nation-states.
