The Wallachians: A Portrait and a Self-Portrait

Summary/Abstract: The study presents the results of ethnological investigations carried out in selected villages in the regions of Vidin and Oryahovo. The selection is not random, because the authors' interest has been directed to the group of the population referred to as Wallachian. Who arc the Wallachians and what kind of people are they? Arc the Wallachians „other" with respect to the majority ethnic community? What arc the stereotype assessments existing in the collective mind of the Bulgarians? What is the self-appraisal, and hence the degree of self-awareness of a difference in the Wallachians themselves? Is there any probability of these differences turning into arguments underlying tension or a conflict? The study has the object to provide an answer to these questions, which have not been studied yet in ethnological literature.
