Summary/Abstract: Currently murder is a crime which is linked with the most severe punishment in the penal regulations all around the world. It is due to the fact that this crime inflicts with the most important and most protected value inherent to mankind, which is life itself. The article elaborates on the changes that have been made in the Polish Penal Code in spite of its twentieth anniversary. In the Penal Code of 1997 the legislator has significantly strengthen the protection of human life, implementing new regulations which were unknown to previous Codes of 1932 and 1969. However, the most important novelty introduced by the Code of 1997 was the distinction of aggravated offences. The article analyzes the statutory features of a crime penalized under article 148 of the Polish Penal Code of 1997.
