Summary/Abstract: János Apáczai Csere was and is regarded by all Hungarian teachers, pedagogical thinkers and school reformers as a model. He exercised a major influence upon his own times: his Puritan contemporaries and disciples preserved a lot of his teachings and carried it further. His knowledge and ideas concerning natural sciences motivated the scholars and physicians of the second half of the seventeenth century. His influence was noticeable in the eighteenth century as well. Nevertheless, his true importance and eminence on the field of national culture was acknowledged by the writers of the Enlightenment. The politicians who intended to renew the Hungarian educational system in the nineteenth century and the reformers of modern pedagogy kept referring to him.
