Summary/Abstract: In November 2018 75 years had passed since the liberation of Kiev, the capital city of the Ukraine. The 1st Independent Czechoslovak Brigade in the Soviet Union played a major role in the combat in 1943. Three of its members, namely Josef Bursik, Antonin Sochor and Richard Tesarik, were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for their heroic contribution. It is paradoxical that exactly ten years later, the first of them was abroad after escaping from a communist prison, the second was dead and the third was in custody suffering interrogation.
