Summary/Abstract: The studies of Europeanization of national political parties are modest in numbers and in inferences that they report. They mainly look at Europeanization as a ‘top-down’ process. These studies are based on two institutionalist approaches: (1) rational and (2) costructivist, with political conditionality as the causal mechanism of the former and political socialization as the causal mechanism of the latter. However the results from this theoretical distinction are overlapping and are sometimes contradictory to each other. In a first instance the scope conditions under which Europeanization of political parties is expected to happen need to be better specified. Secondly, and more important, Europeanization of national political parties should also be seen as a ‘bottom-up’ process. Such an approach should encapsulate the demand coming from ones that are being ‘Europeanizied’, even in countries that are only potential European Union Member State.
