Summary/Abstract: Reduction and mitigation of adverse events in the healthcare system for the purpose of enabling the patient safety is an emerging issue requiring urgent global response. The costs of unsafe healthcare services – both social and financial - born by individuals, their families, the community and the state – are immense. The awareness of the governments, healthcare sector and the public about the need for promotion of the patient safety within the healthcare services provided is continuously being increased. This, however, is not yet the case in the Republic of Macedonia, where the awareness of the necessity for separate and targeted address to this issue is not yet elevated to the critical level for immediate actions to be taken. This analysis is focused on the legal and policy documents as one of the instruments that can be used to promote the safety of the patients.
