Summary/Abstract: This article tries to summarise what can be found in the classical sources about the life and career of Krateros, a nobleman from Upper Macedonia, who played an important role in the campaigns of Alexander the Great as a king’s general. From his origin we, can draw the conclusion that he was an aristocratic hostage in the Macedonian court in his early years. Krateros’s name appears first after the crossing of the Bosporus, as the leader of one of the infantry taxeis in the army. A the end of his life, he is the bearer of the royal tethers in Macedonia and Greece. The paper pays close attention to his advance in the chain of command during the conquests. In this context, I examine his actions as a field officer and his role in the inner politics of the army, and also the environment that made possible the development of this splendid career.
