Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the theme of the island in the work of Sibe Miličić (1886-1945), starting with his collection of poems (3, The Book of Joy), but concentrating mainly on his work entitled The chronicle of the sunken island (1928), which constitutes an example of insular literature in the South Slavic environment. This work consists of two narrative blocks, The sea and The secret of a crime, which both talk about life on islands in general in any historical period but it is likely that the author had Hvar in Croatia in mind. The text deals with the two basic instincts of food and sex. The author transforms an initial, idyllic picture of the island as a beautiful place, a real locus amoenus, into a locus asper, fraught with danger.
