The Declaration of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the circumstances favoring the Union of Bessarabia with Romania in the spring of 1918, rendering the discussions around and the content of the Declaration of the Union between the two states. The author highlights the desire of Romanians from both states to unite, the practicalities of the Union (from governance or administrative and military issues to the rights of the minorities living in Bessarabia at that time).The Declaration of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania was voted by Bessarabia’s State Council on March 27, 1918, and was ratified by King Ferdinand I of Romania on April 9/22, 1918, thus paving the way to the Great Union of Romania with Transylvania on December 1, 1918.
