Summary/Abstract: 1917 was for Russia a revolutionary year, with important consequences both internally and internationally. Romania, which was Russia’s ally in the First World War, as members of the Entente, was fully influenced by the events taking place in this country. The revolution in February 1917 was well received, with the exception of the Royal House, which was worried by the removal of the Tsar, a relative of Queen Marie’s. The October revolution had a negative echo among the government and the political parties; only the revolutionary committee in Odessa saluted this event. In their turn, the Romanians from Bessarabia took advantage of the context created by the February revolution to proclaim the autonomy of the province. They also profited of the fact that after the October revolution the Bolshevik government issued a declaration stipulating the right of the peoples of Russia to self-determination, including secession and the formation of a separate state. Therefore, on the 24th of January 1918 Sfatul Ţării (the City Council) voted the independence of Bessarabia and then, on the 27th of March, the union with Romania. Thus, after 106 years of Russian domination, the Moldavian land between the Prut and the Dniester rivers was returned to its Fatherland.
