Translation and commentary of the foreword to the tafsir Al-Mīzān of Allamah Tabataba’i

Summary/Abstract: Muhammad Husayn Tabataba’i (1903-1981), known as Allamah Tabataba’i, is one of the greatest Iranian Shia philosophers in the 20th century. His most famous work is Tafsir (Commentary of the Quran) under the title Al-Mīzān fī tafsīr al-Qur’ān in twenty volumes, on which he worked from 1954 to 1972. In his foreword (al-muqaddima) to Al-Mīzān, Tabataba’i concisely describes the method of research (maslak al-bahth) applied in this work. He also speaks conclusively about the history of tafsir, the causes of the division in tafsir, older and newer tafsir methods and their short comings, as well as his own methodological views and their interpretative consequences. Because of the undoubted tafsir importance and originality of the foreword to Al-Mīzān, the author offers his translation into the Bosnian language with short comments in footnotes.
