Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyse the differences and discrepancies in the understanding of nation and people in the texts of French thinkers involved in convening and sessions of Estates General in the years 1788-1790. The aim of the comparison is to indicate mutual relations between the concepts of people, nation and the socio-political thought of the ideological and political parties in the period. The debate of advocates and opponents of the French revolution regarding these notions in the early stages of he Revolution is a key moment in shaping the modern definitions of nation and people and is an introduction to the 19th and 20th century deliberations, ending in modern times.
