Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with descriptive terms commonly occurring in zoology and botany. The namesof animals and plants often carry important information about the characteristics of subjectsnamed. They are used not only by experts in the field but also by the public in everyday communication. Creating these terms is mostly based on their important characteristics, but sometimesa special term is the result of a subjective approach when unimportant features are given preference. Figurative language and expressivity are frequent within artistic styles, in analytical genresof journalism, but also in spontaneous communication. In different types of texts, they have various functions (for instance, esthetic, pervasive etc.), but they are often used without concretepurpose. Although we do not connect these features with a special functional style, they can alsobe found there.
