Summary/Abstract: Theater pedagogy (Ger. Theaterpädagogik) is an independent discipline, which emerged in the 1970s in German-speaking countries (Germany and Switzerland in the first place). The need for this discipline first arose from economic reasons. After numerous transformations that followed its development, today it represents a recognized interdisciplinary field, settled between art and science. Its assertion is evident by the increasing number of scientific and academic publications in theater pedagogy, as well as the variety of institutions in which it is studied, such as associations, institutes, colleges and universities. This paper presents the emergence and development of theater pedagogy in German-speaking countries, along with its starting point in Serbia, emphasizing various possibilities of its application in practice, for example, in working with school groups or marginal groups (prison inmates, elderly people, refugees, or representatives of the LGBT population). It has been shown that theater pedagogy has a positive impact on personality formation and development, as well as the acquisition of key competencies. It also provides a wide range of options in a global society where intercultural communication is inevitable and the knowledge of (at least) one foreign language its prerequisite. Since its primary goal is the aesthetic education of the individual, its role in today’s modern education is indisputable. Hence the idea of introducing it as a mandatory school subject occurred.
