Summary/Abstract: Bohuszewicz presents a critical reading of Paweł Brożek’s documentary film Niepamięć [Non-Memory, 2015], in which the producer Magdalena Bartecka plays the main role herself. Bohuszewicz argues that her quest for complete identification with the peasant class is problematic in terms of both anthropology and ethics. Insisting the differences between the nobility and the peasant class, Bartecka refuses to acknowledge that this gap was overcome with the rise of the intelligentsia in the eighteenth century – a fact that, ironically, has made it possible for a film like this to be produced in the first place. Bohuszewicz anchors the film in its broader context, such as the notion of a “manor identity” popularised by cultural philosopher Andrzej Leder in his book Prześniona rewolucja [The Overslept Revolution], as well as Agata Bielik-Robson’s critical concept of the new humanities.
