The Opposition “Romance”: The Novel and the Problems of Literary History

Author(s): Paweł Bohuszewicz
Subject(s): Studies of Literature
Published by: Instytut Badań Literackich Polskiej Akademii Nauk
Keywords: romance; novel; longue durée; evental history; conjuncture

Summary/Abstract: Bohuszewicz argues that the romance (understood as a premodern form of the novel) and the Enlightenment novel have until now been understood as elements in an axiologically marked opposition, actualising a model of literary history that was antagonistic, singlelevel and “conjunctural” (to draw on Fernand Braudel’s terminology). This opposition should not simply be rejected but it should viewed in the context of other kinds of relationships, including continuation, negotiation and transposition [przemieszczenie]. This will only become possible when we take a different view of literary history: not only as the history of literary events and conjunctures, but also as long-term history [longue durée].
