Summary/Abstract: The role of the media on the individual and society is large, and the media must accept responsibility for what they are publishing. The good sides of critical and condemned reporting of violence are indisputable, because it draws public attention to violence, as a negative social phenomenon. Objective, impartial informing of the public, guided by professional ethics and their own moral laws, the media raises awareness of the frequency of violence and the need for an institutional reaction. In recent years, there has been a downward trend in professional standards in journalism, disrespect of the principles of media ethics and a high level of social irresponsibility of journalists. With the desire to achieve high ratings, who bring profit, there is a sensational reporting about violence in the media. The author in the paper points out some examples of reporting on violence, which are not in accordance with the Code of Ethics for Journalists and analyzes the legal framework of Republic of Serbia, ethical standards, institutions and mechanisms that should contribute to a true, fair, fact-based reporting on violence, while respecting the dignity of the victim, protecting children and minors from violent content in the media and preventing violence. The paper also discusses about specific type of violence through the Internet or cyberbullyng, which can have serious consequences and which are most often exposed children and adolescents. Journalists should contribute to building a society that does not tolerate violence, to act only as objective observers, not to show their own prejudices, and according to their readers, viewers and listeners must act responsibly, correctly and professionally, protecting the integrity of their profession.
