Summary/Abstract: The author discerns three fundamental hypotheses in Max Weber’s »The City«: (1J as a specific, rational culture, the city exists only in the West; (2) the city comes into being in the Middle Ages and it owes its originality to a kind of political autonomy which has never been enjoyed by Eastern cities; (3) the origins of modem Western democracy should be sought not in the Greek but rather in the medieval city.
