Summary/Abstract: When attempting to understand an action by an ancestor of mine from around 70 years ago, I started studying the financial behavior of the residents of Serbia during World War II. A necessary step was to study the black market in foreign currency. The data, aside from general information to be found in sparse literature, must be sought in the Archives of the National bank of Serbia. Faced with different methodological challenges, and combining a historiographical with an anthropological approach and quantitative and qualitative analyses, I managed to reconstruct patterns of financial behavior which led to my ancestors actions which I wanted to understand. The data from the archives was interpreted using statistical, semiological and discursive analyses.
