Summary/Abstract: The origins of the novel must be sought in antiquity, in the Greco-Latin epic, which is also defined in correlation with the novel: "epic species in verses, of great magnitude-corresponding to novel prose-telling heroic events ...". Moreover, the epic term has Greek etymology - epikos, derived from epic - meaning telling, thus indicating the main feature of the genre, based on the succession of ideas closely related to certain conventions, the main ones being temporality, spatiality, presence of the narrator, of the characters. From epic to Roman, however, it is a rather difficult road for the latter, the reason being the support of other species in antiquity (such as tragedy), but even in the later epochs it is marginalized. The Russian theorist, MihailBahtin, has observed throughout the history of European literature the separation of low (popular) and noble (elevated) species. Among these low species appears also the novel. As we have seen, the novel is a literary species that gained the supremacy in the twentieth century when most types of novel appear. With the help of novelists such as Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, Anton Holban, M. Blecher, M. Eliade, and especially Camil Petrescu, the Romanian novel of the 1930s is changing very much in the sense of modernity. The new Romanian novelists are in step with the European trends, synchronous, as Eugen Lovinescu, the great supporter of that period of young talents, says. This opening allows a modern education that leads to the emergence of Romanian masterpieces, which are not the result of imitations, but simply respond to the needs of a generation that has left its mark on native literature. These writers want both the consolidation of links with European literature and the demonstration of originality through creations approaching and moving away from Western models.
