Summary/Abstract: The narrative of Classical Greece as the fount of the supreme aesthetic and ethic principles is one of the corner-stones of the modern European culture. Based upon the writings of J. J. Winckelmann, published by the middle of the 18th century, this attitude became widespread among the elite through the work of W. Humboldt, the Prussian minister of education (1809 – 1810). However, the emphasis of the narrative changed through time and the ideas of individual freedom of citizens have been replaced by the idea of superiority of those cultures and individuals who possess the knowledge of Classical antiquity. The paper discusses the possibilities of different articulation of this segment of the European heritage in education, emphasizing the multi-layered qualities of the classical role models.
