Summary/Abstract: The article presents the key principles of the Polish Ethnolinguistic School. The author outlines the main achievements of the scientific approach, used by J. Bartminski and his followers. Special attention is devoted to the development of the term stereotype and its application in description and reconstruction of folk tradition. The advantages of examining the phraseological unit as a stereotypical combination of words in contemporary language are also discussed.
