Summary/Abstract: Jerzy Bartmiński and Stanisława Niebrzegowska-Bartmińska’s conception of profiling is tested for its usefuleness in describing the profiling of the base image of a mental object. This specific case study concerns the Polish names for snow. The data come from dictionaries of standard Polish, from contemporary specialist publications in meteorology, climate engineering, crystalography, communication, winter sports, as well as from folk dialects. The base image of snow consists of its physical features. The basic term (śnieg) reflects the similarity of snow and rain (deszcz). The precise and systemic scientific terms refer to objective features of snow; specialist practitioners (road menders, skiers, hunters) perceive and name it both in objective and functional terms. Colloquial names are objectively and subjectively motivated: through analogy they relate to known objects (puch ‘down, fluff’, krupy ‘groats’, kasza ‘groats, grits, cereals’). Folk names are subjective and reflect the system of beliefs within a specific mythological worldview. For a name to be considered a profiling tool, it must be based on a subjective understanding of the object on the part of the subject, which is especially conspicuous in the case of synonyms.
