Summary/Abstract: Dealing with the phenomenon of social exclusion in the context of regional differences in the literacy level and educational structure of the population is gaining significance, among other things, due to the fact that in Serbia there are huge disparities in the development of certain areas. Another reason is the fact that, despite the disagreements among different authors on the definition of the concept of social exclusion, the dimension of the availability of educational institutions in a number of operational definitions is recognized as being of crucial importance, and education is recognized as an important mechanism of the integration of individuals and social groups. In the first part of the paper, the main characteristics of the concept of social exclusion and tendencies in its research concretization are pointed out. In the second part of the paper, the focus of attention is the relationship between the level of education achieved by individuals or social groups and the risk of social exclusion, and in this context, the analysis of literacy level and the educational structure in border municipalities in eastern and southereastern Serbia.
