Summary/Abstract: Considering the process of the formation of nations, the question arises as to what extent nations are determined historically and to what extent created or even “invented”. The nation in the article is treated as ethnicity acquiring the level of creative self-awareness. There are two ways for the historical formation of nations - the Western way, when the nation is formed by the state, and the Eastern one, when, on the contrary, the state is built up by the nation. A new problem now arises: how the decline of the nation state influences the self-awareness of nations.
