A Polish-Ukranian Encounter: Rereading Oksana [Oxana]

Summary/Abstract: Iwasiów’s concept of rereading stands for a practice of interpretation that revolves around historicizing reception as well as autocommentary. In this article she explores Włodzimierz Odojewski’s novel Oksana [Oxana], which deals with Polish-Ukranian relations. In 1999, the year of the novel’s first publication, critics foregrounded gaps in the archive and the metaphor of silence. Today the context has shifted to the politics of history in Poland and Ukraine, as well as the everyday experience of encountering migrants. This article also refers to the novel’s mythological framework, where female characters appear in the polar roles of the vengeful and the sacrificing woman – Rosamund and Alcestis.
