A Jew Writing in Hebrew in Warsaw: Why?

Summary/Abstract: A discussion of Hebrew-language literary periodicals published in Warsaw at the turn of 20th century – the time Warsaw was a flourishing hub of Hebrew literature as well as journalism. The topics dealt with by those periodicals included, inter alia, renewal of Hebrew language and literature as an essential dimension of the then-arising Jewish nationality, or a hot debate on quality and tasks of modern Hebrew literature. Some of the contributing authors later became pillars of modern Hebrew literature – to name H.N. Bialik, S. Czernichowski, or M.J. Berdyczowski. The author tracks down a series of themes relating to the Polish context, in terms of whether the Hebrew writers actually referred to the place they lived in, the language they heard and the Polish literature ‘surrounding’ them. Moreover, Polish literary works translated into Hebrew are discussed and a possible influence of Polish nationality on the Zionist movement is considered.
