Summary/Abstract: The consequence of the development of audit culture in higher education in Poland is the progressive institutionalization of research ethics, including social research. At the same time, little is known about the attitude of Polish social researchers towards ethical committees. The article is based on in-depth interviews with sociologists and socio-cultural anthropologists, who conducted qualitative research, among others, with the vulnerable participants. The text discusses the views of researchers on how ethics committees in Poland should and should not work. The analysis focuses on several issues: the role of such bodies, the scope of their authority, the way they evaluate research ethics and their composition. The effect of the considerations is the proposal of a model of ethics committees for social research, which is an attempt to reconcile various opinions of researchers on this issue.
