Summary/Abstract: Our current postmodern society is characterized by the aspiration towards freedom, a truly precious achievement. However, this freedom seems to be jeopardized by justified intolerance based on freedom - often in the religious realm. But the promotion of freedom requires balance. In this context, the mutual relationship between freedom, responsibility and compassion will be analyzed. On the one hand it reveals that the freedom of the individual is an essential condition in developing the capacity for compassion and personal responsibility. On the other hand, it confirms the reality that only the compassionate responsibility can guarantee a secure framework for the development of personal liberty within society. In accomplishing this goal, not only parents and educators are called to be involved, but also the whole society.
