Summary/Abstract: The communication with persons in crisis is a serious challenge for many professionals like psychologists and social workers. The current paper aims to present the specifics and significance of nonverbal communication in the process of identifying of the psychological crisis and in the crisis consultation. On the basis of interviews and focus groups with representatives of the helping professions – psychologists in a crisis center, psychotherapists, helpline counselors – the material presents some typical nonverbal reactions to a crisis as well as ways in which the professionals can use their own nonverbal communication in order to cope with the crisis and prevent escalation of tension. The topic is approached through the prism of different forms of nonverbal communication – kinesics, proxemics, nonverbal vocalization, physical appearance.
