Summary/Abstract: Given the geographical location, wealth, distribution and the level of representation of the types of natural habitats within the territory which overlaps 5 of the 11 bio-geographical regions of Europe, Romania represents a special case as far as the responsibility regarding the protection of biodiversity is concerned. Consequently, the legislative acts dealing with the environmental protection, an objective of major public interest, on the basis of the strategic principles and elements that lead to the sustainable development of the society, directly circumscribe, as well, the principle concerning the conservation of biodiversity and of ecosystems specific to the natural bio-geographic framework. To this effect, the legislation ensures the conservation of natural habitats, of wild flora and fauna in Romania by creating and developing the national network of protected areas and natural monuments.
