Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the notion of collocation in the framework of foreign language teaching and translation training. The study shows that in Turkey collocations are mainly approached as formal structures. There are a few studies which describe collocations as the coherence among the concepts in the text. Since any of the approaches shed light on the problem of switching from the semantic patterns stored in the mental lexicon into lexical patterns in the language system, they are assumed to be unfruitful in the context of foreign language teaching and translation training. The article provides an example of an analysis in the framework of Melçuk & Jolkovski’s (1984) meaning↔text approach which describes the lexicalization of the semantic patterns through the notion of lexical function. The semantic pattern lexicalized in Russian language by the item “конфликт’ (conflict) is examined. Comparative linguistic study of the collocations is believed to be helpful in raising semantic awareness of the students toward the phenomenon.
