The Tradition of Representation of History in Lithuanian Dramaturgy

Summary/Abstract: The tradition of representation of history in Lithuanian dramaturgy that was formed during the period since the end of the 19th century until the 1990s is reviewed and systematised in the article. The main stages of development of historical drama are also distinguished. After consideration of influence of political and social processes on the dramatic creativity, three types of reflection of history are defined: 1) romantic, 2) historiosophical, 3) anti-heroic reflection of history in drama. When studying the transformations of the tradition of historical drama, the mentioned stages of development are analysed in three aspects: representation of a national leader and protagonist of drama as well as the attitude towards the significance of a woman in history. The change of the concept of national identity, hesitations of world-view and main values of the historic drama are also discussed in the article.
