Educational activity of Universities of the Third Age in shaping the health awareness of seniors

Summary/Abstract: In Poland the considerable part of elderly people express a slight interest in their health, its protection, maintaining and improving. Arousing the certain awareness builds only foundations in the entire process of pro‐health transformation. Creating conditions of the support and the help to the elderly in shaping the proper lifestyle seems to be crucial. Universities of the Third Age (UTW) undoubtedly fulfil such a role. The number of these universities in the country and in the world grows successively as the years go by. The common interest in the issues concerning Universities of the Third Age is reflected in theoretical deliberations as well as in the number of conducted empirical research. The purpose of the present work is an evaluation of educational activity of Universities of the Third Age in shaping the needs and the health awareness of listeners. To achieve the targets, there were randomly selected 500 seniors, 100 people from each of 5 Universities of the Third Age: in Jelenia Góra, Katowice, Łódź, Warsaw and Wrocław. For the purposes of the work a questionnaire was constructed. It consisted of the short introduction, demographics and 11 closed questions. Research had a character of a direct contact, and the respondents were filling in a questionnaire independently. Analysis of findings was conducted with the use of Microsoft Office Excel 2007 software. Findings of the research showed that the improvement of the subjectively evaluated respondents' state of health is influenced by activities conducted by Universities of the Third Age (56%). For the vast majority of respondents (87%), programme contents concerning a healthy lifestyle meet their expectations, and the classes "strongly" (59%) and "very strongly" (9%) influence the positive change of health behaviours. Listeners (53%) also stated that thanks to the University of the Third Age meetings changed their view on the specific illnesses and prophylaxis. The majority of respondents (71%) was willing to be involved in extra activities, conducted within the frames of specialist medical modules.
