Summary/Abstract: In this paper we propose to develop a cross-reading of the notion of imaginary based on the theses that Sartre and Blanchot exposed on this topic around the 40s of the 20th century. Two key notions guide our reflection: irréalisation and néantisation. By constantly resorting to them, we will try to highlight the profoundly problematic nature of the relationship with reality that the two thinkers' narrative universes develop. Thus, we will come to show not only the lines of continuity between the conceptions of the imaginary put in place by Sartre and Blanchot, but also the elements of fracture and disagreement that distance the two authors. In the conclusions we will also try to trace a rapid analysis aimed at highlighting the central role of the descriptive pauses in the general economy of the two thinkers’ novels of the two thinkers. It will be evident how the theoretical assumptions related to the imaginary exhibited by Sartre in the texte L’imaginaire and by Blanchot in two collections of writings (La part du feu and L’espace littéraire) radically substantiate the development of the narrative techniques developed by the two French writers.
